Essex schools go digital as a new health programme launches

Our vision:

To work together to deliver
demonstrable benefits to the health,
well-being and social care of our
local population, through innovation,
education and research.

An exciting new digital programme for schools has launched in Essex this month, with eight schools participating in the pilot. Digital Healthy Schools – a global first - sees three primary and five secondary schools engaging with mobile ‘apps’ to help them manage their health.

In collaboration with teachers and students from the schools, the programme has been co-created around a website, myhealthessex.orcha.co.uk, where ‘safe’ health apps can be searched, compared, downloaded – and even recommended.

Anglia Ruskin Health Partners (ARHP), Active Essex, Essex County Council, and ORCHA (the Organisation for the Review of Care and Health Applications) are delighted to be collaborating across Essex as the programme rolls-out.

Clare Morris, Managing Director of Anglia Ruskin Health Partners (ARHP) said: “Through this programme, we are encouraging children to take a pro-active approach to their own health and to assist with their physical and psychological health needs.”

“We’re seeing more and more health apps enter the market with 170,000 already active. This innovative programme provides a secure and assured environment for children to find and use the best apps on the market.”

Patrick Guthrie from Essex County Council said: “We are very excited to be working in partnership on this programme. Collaboration between schools and health is vital and this innovative and unique approach brings together the best in digital, health and learning to our children.”

The eight schools participating in the first phase of the programme are:

o       Alton Park Junior School

o       Clacton Coastal Academy

o       Colchester Academy

o       Holland Park Primary School

o       Lyons Hall Primary School

o       Ormiston Rivers Academy

o       Philip Morant School and College

o       Plume School
